This piece was commissioned for the auditorium of the Aristos Hotel in Mexico City in 1968. A project that was rooted in the swinging spirit of the 1960s defined by La Ruptura (Breakaway Generation). A group of artists that aimed for a universal approach to art, breaking away from “dogmatic, government-controlled” muralism. Mérida’s abstract, geometric mural can be considered as an epitome of this new movement.
As a young aspiring musician, partial deafness forces Mérida to find solace for his poetic melody with form and color as a visual artist. Inspired by Diego Rivera’s Mexico, he breaks from the master’s voice by interpreting the social revolution and his heritage with a contrasting language of geometric form which defines what is now considered Mérida´s mature style.
Timeless, abstract and colorful expressions through the use of lacquered and gilded mahogany constitute his legacy as the master of color and form in this mural. Secuencia de una intención plástica is a masterpiece that embodies the essence of Mérida´s iconic style and the soul of a generation searching for its own voice.
